Predictor of well-being
This study was intended to determine if mental health at the start of the CMD (common mental disorder) pathway was protecting. The study was conducted using a sex-adjusted, nationally representative survey of adults aged 15+. By using a validated measure, participants were evaluated on three eudaimonic indicators of well-being as well as their mental health status.
First, we identified the most significant predictors of wellbeing in this sample. Among these, the most significant were mental wellbeing and satisfaction with life.
Then, we looked at the proportions of the important effects. Particularly, we examined how well the various measures correlated to a variety of demographic variables.
We also performed multiple regression analyses to determine the impact of various income levels. These results provide a quantitative measure of the impact higher levels of income on subjective wellbeing. When compared to those with lower incomes, higher income levels were associated with lower risks of depression, CMDs and other mental disorders that are common.
The presence of children at home was a major element in the wellbeing of children. The presence of young children in the home was associated with worry, anxiety, and sadness. A high percentage of people said they felt positive at least once a day.
In addition, we measured the effects of leisure activities on five conceptions of wellbeing. Overall we found that leisure activities had a positive effect on all the above concepts. For example, participants’ ability to relax was a better indicator of happiness than their stress levels.
We utilized the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (a 14-item measure) to determine the impact of these factors on the mental health of people. It has been validated in Denmark and is used to measure general wellbeing in the population. Pre-defined cut-points for low, moderate and high levels of mental well-being were set for each of the three eudaimonic dimensions.
These are only one of the most relevant indicators. Many other factors are also thought to influence well-being. However, they haven’t been extensively researched. We hope that future studies will expand upon the many studies that have been conducted.
